ISSS 2016 Realizing Sustainable Futures

Global System Science began in 1986 with the IGBP, which was the product mainly of geoscientists realizing the vision of the Earth from Space in which we could literally see it as a whole. Inspiring as that was, our concepts and scientific view were not as whole as our vision. In particular it has been extremely hard to integrate physical system science with human system science. But where we all want to go, both mainstream science and visionary systems sciences, is toward a more integral understanding of whole systems and the unity of nature. We do not differ on the goal, but on the method. And in striving for both practical and theoretical understandings, we cannot lose sight of the diversity of both the world and our concepts and perceptions of it. Understanding systems sustainability is very much a case of finding “Unity in Diversity”, in which both can be realized to the maximum degree — they are not alternatives but complements.
Past ISSS President John Kineman gave a presentation to the WAVES conference (http://www.wavesinternational.net) at the invitation of Prof. Bhakti Vijana Muni, linking Relational Holon Theory with the core model of reality presented in the Vedas and later Upanishads. Read moreMichael provided some nice references to the concept of Anticipation. It is also crucial to the Rosen relational theory perspective that Judith and I have in mind to resurrect in ISSS.
