It is clear that society is driven by a huge political and financial industry that we have made ourselves dependent on as a species. And yet, this huge enterprise may not be sustainable as a system. We need to give the highest priority to exploring that sustainability or lack of it, and ways to transform this essential foundation of society into something that can continue to work. If it is based on false assumptions, or there are natural limits it cannot exceed, we must know them and have the courage to deal with them so that the necessary transition can be made smoothly and not through increasingly intense crises.
