We end the conference, hopefully, with a better idea of what is needed to “realize sustainable futures in socio-ecological systems”. This task will be handed to our students. If the seasoned and presently educated have experience and wisdom, which we do; the students have time, which we don’t. It is our task to guide them, but given the immensity of the challenge we as a society are handing to them — a challenge they understand, by the way — and given the immense inertial we have created in our social, political, economic, scientific, and educational systems, or primary task must be to unshackle these students and encourage creative “out-of-the-box” modes of learning and paradigms of thought. In contrast to tightly limited science driven by today’s policies, we need to empower them to explore new science driven by policies and designs not yet invented. As we bring the conference to a close, we need to consider how this education program will be carried forward.
